of March 2001
View Highlights
On the 12th of March 2001 at Midday, the Commonwealth
and the English-speaking Union hosted the central part
of the Commonwealth celebrations for the day, from the
Locarno Room at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
in London.
The
theme of Commonwealth Day 2001 was "A New Generation".
The ESU contributed to the celebrations by hosting an
online debate on the motion that "This House believes
that the Commonwealth matters". Teams from the
UK and South Africa argued the motion live before audiences
of young people in London and Pretoria. Click
here to view excerpts from the debate. (You will
need QuickTime
to view the clips).
The
debate was organised by the English-Speaking Union,
supported by its technology partner LiveTX. It was sponsored
by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
This
debate was the third internet debate run by the ESU
and LiveTX. The first was a
transatlantic Internet debate on the 14th of March
2000. The second was between the UK
and Bermuda, also supported by the Foreign and Commonwealth
Office as part of its contributions to the "String
of Pearls" festival in June last year.
To
accompany this event, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
are hosting a debate on the role of the modern Commonwealth
on its website www.fco.gov.uk/forum
from 5 to 16 March.
