More
athletes from more countries will compete in 17 sports,
making Manchester 2002 the biggest Commonwealth Games
ever staged. From 72 nations across the world, athletes
will live and compete side by side in an event which
celebrates the Commonwealth's sporting excellence and
cultural diversity.
It will be the biggest sporting pageant in the world
that year - a superb competition for athletes and a
breathtaking experience for spectators as they watch
world and Commonwealth records shattered. Manchester
is known all over the world as "the friendly city" and
sporting capital of the UK. It provides a multi-cultural,
yet intimate environment for the Games where athletes
and spectators from across the globe will be warmly
