English-Speaking Union
4th of December 2001

On the 4 December 2001 at 10.30am GMT, the English-speaking Union will stage an internet debate to mark the launch of ESU Hong Kong. This debate will take place between a team in the Map Room of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and Hong Kong Baptist University, and is generously supported by Hutchison 3G.

The motion for the debate will be "This house believes that true international understanding can only come from a common culture."

This debate is the fourth internet debate run by the ESU and LiveTX. The first was a transatlantic Internet debate on the 14th of March 2000. The second was between the UK and Bermuda, also supported by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as part of its contributions to the "String of Pearls" festival in June last year, and the third was a central part of the Commonwealth Day 2001 celebrations on 12th March.
