day 10 detail

Diary by Kenny Ions;

"I'll bash on, Day 10, 4th of October 99, Monday - Tangnag to Khare. Weather: cloudy as usual but with some views and our altitude today is 5015m, over the 5000 mark! Well, we've all made it up this far and I'm happy to write that we're all in very good form, no mountain sickness and probably not even a blister. The pace is great, and we've all plodded up here nicely. I had some great views this morning of some corniches where last night's avalanches had obviously occurred. All a little preview of what's to come no doubt, until, guess what, the clouds came in again and this time it brought for a novelty, it brought snow instead of rain which was obviously much better.

The food is still excellent although there seems to be an increase in the bean and pea content especially around the lunchtime mark and with this in mind, I'll bring you the all new Mera Peak farting league: In reverse order we have Ben, Guy and Marcus who are basically doing fairly good impressions of church mice, nothing going on there at all. Myself, Ken Ions in fifth place, pot pourit and lavender being the order of the day. Jeff Harper in fourth place with a very angry bottom. Number three Kieran Doherty, rotten eggs being the order of the day there. Number two, Toby Younger, who is basically going at it like an elephant, and number one the Ayatollah, leader of the group, Mr Toby Wootton who is just like a hot air balloon, he can't stop. Well basically producing enough hot air up here to float to the top of the mountain so if you are thinking it's hard up here, it's pretty easy really.

Anyway we arrived here at Khare to find that another expedition had already arrived and I have to say, I was wholly unimpressed by the amount of rubbish and kak lying about the place. It's not the best site we've been to but I suppose that's just a result of what we're doing up here.

Rest day tomorrow and we're heading up to the edge of the glacier and an acclimatization exercise with the sherpas. We're hopefully going to cut a trail to high camp for us which I can tell you now we've half done have done. I'm slightly concerned that more snow is lying around the tent here tonight and obviously it's not going to make it any easier to get to the top but all in all and over all we're in good spirits and having a good time."
