Diary
by Kieran
Doherty;
"Day
11 which was a rest day. Woke last night at 3am and went outside
to witness the most amazing scenery yet; there were no clouds
in the sky as all the stars were lit up, the whole horizon
was lit up with snow covered mountains. They really stand
out in the night. Caught my first glimpse of Merapeak.
At
6am I woke up Ben and Toby Younger to see if they wanted to
steal the scenery as the clouds were coming in. We did a recce
for about an hour and a half and then at 8am I had to put
on sunblock because my face was reddening, unfortunately the
sun only lasted until about 9.30.
At
tennish we all ascended to the glacier which was at 5330m.
It was the first time I felt the effects of the altitude,
my lung capacity and breathing are absolutely fine, however
I had a bit of a headache and felt absolutely knackered. On
return Paul was not letting me go to sleep as he says this
will make the headache worse. I don't quite understand that
but obviously he knows what he is talking about.
For
the first time I was questioning my ability to reach the summit,
although tomorrow we are going to high camp which is approximately
5800m and then we are going to have a rest day. My appetite
was non-existant at lunch but after tasting a pastie it soon
returned.
This
afternoon we practiced roping up, I'm going to be with Toby
Younger, Ben and also Guy. Toby Wotton gave us a bit of a
brief and also emphasized the importance of letting people
know that if you are not feeling well etc. It was decided
that if anybody comes down tomorrow because of a headache,
then they'll not return to the higher camp and therefore will
forfeit their summit. Having said that our guide Mr Walker
and Paul, all expect all of us to reach the summit."
