Diary
by Marcus
Tillotson;
"Today
was an epic day. We moved from Base Camp at 5000m to High
Camp. We set off early and everything was going well until
after one hour Toby Wotton had to go down with a chesty, gurgling
cough. He had been enduring this for a few days and his decision
has not come lightly. The fact that he turned back early shows
the selflessness of his decision and he was trying not to
affect the rest of the team.
Everyone was rocked by the realization we were losing another
valued member of the team. We trekked on and reached the glacier.
Toby Younger was also having difficulties as he felt nauseous
and low on energy, again he had to face the most difficult
decision of all and he bravely decided to go down.
The
rest of us carried on just 5600m and finally hauled our exhausted
bodies into High Camp. On the way down we had seen the porters
running down the slope with broad grins on their face, knowing
they had established High Camp and would have the next two
days without any work.
That
evening we spent another meal quietly in the mess tent, the
three sherpas spent the night in their tent and we realized
that Mohan and the cook were to spend their's under plastic
tarpaulins. Then Ben kindly offered Mohan his jacket which
he accepted in a fraction of a second, cook however decided
to sleep under plastic at 5600m and this increases our utmost
respect that we have for these Nepalese Sherpas. It all made
us feel better about the night we had to face ahead."
