Diary
by Toby Younger;
"Woke
up feeling human again, yesterday was a 'mare with a terrible
hangover. Early start, beautiful views, away from Tangnag
for a while. A quiet and calm day heading up towards the big
pass, we're camping on the Tangnag side of the valley, since
there is no suitable camp site on the other side of the pass.
For
the first time on the move, our lunch was in the sun, (well
most of the time) and everybody dozed in between courses.
We could still see Tangnag in the distance. We arrived at
our camping area in the last of the day's sun before the clouds
moved in. We all retired to a lone, recently constructed,
what can only be called a mini-tavern with a Nepalese landlady.
Sitting on hay around a small fire in the middle of one room
shed, the landlady provided us with Nepali tea.
By
this stage, every one of us, including the porters had arrived
and settled down in the mini-tavern. Here, Paul translated
the porter's comments and jokes, here we learned that some
of us had nick names, Paul told the porters the names we had
given them, the main reason for this was the difficulty in
pronouncing their names. Ben and Guy were known as Spring
and Ocean, this was to show their huge differences in personality,
despite being brothers. We also had to guess the ages of the
porters. We didn't do too badly, however when they tried to
work us out, well that's a different story. Jeff was 30 yrs+
and Ken was 38; the poor bloke is only 27 really. After a
great supper we slept under the stars once again, the stars
are out tonight so it's going to be a cold one."
