Diary
by Kieran Doherty;
"Woke
6am to a sherpa tea after a fantastic night's sleep and had
luxury of a warm shower before a hugely impressive breakfast.
Paul, the manager, is always keen to offer information on
the culture or the area. Before leaving this morning he pointed
out the multicoloured apron which a lady was wearing. All
Nepalese women wear them. If they are married they are worn
in front and if they are not married they are worn behind.
And I found that quite interesting.
At
8am we set off up hill and, after reaching a pass at 3,050
meters, we made our descent. We set off to some impressive
scenery and the weather was good. At the bottom of the valley
we had to cross a 200 yard foot bridge which was a rope bridge,
and that was 50 meters above the river. We eventually arrived
for lunch at 1pm to find that, amazingly, the chef had been
there since 10.30. After lunch we estimated that we would
reach camp three at 5pm, following the advice from our guide
and also from Paul. However, the buggeds stiched us as we
got there at 3.20 in the absolute pissing rain.
Leeches.
Now I've been drip fed fear for the last few days, with regards
to leeches. I absolutely hate the buggers and the boys are
obviously playing on the fact. The truth is they hate them
as well but they're too bloody neanderthal to admit this.
The leeches are absolutely everywhere. Paul had a leech story
and that is when a cow is covered in leeches the Nepalese
steam them off and they cook them. The trekking is actually
quite tough but putting up with miserable insects is actually
worse. Wootton, Marc, Ken and myself are all on courses of
Amoxcillyn at the moment and are must rest after these courses
but they're only for minor sort of ailments.
Apparently
tomorrow we're going to be walking two goats which we will
slaughter. Jeff wants to name these William and Gertie and
become quite attached beforehand. With regards to food: for
breakfast we had porridge, omelette, toast and marmalade;
for lunch we had rice, pasta and tuna, and [echegus] which
is a vegetable; and for dinner we had mashed potato, greens
and [sweaney stew]. And that's the diary for day three."
