Diary
by Toby Younger;
"Great
night sleep only interrupted by a torrential down poor and
the company of what is now a squashed caterpillar. My fractal
coloured bag liner is now stained with green spots.
Had
a great view of the white snow capped mountain at the head
of the valley, about two days walk away - it is the only view
we have had so far. How it can rain so much. Having had so
much good weather whilst training in Scotland and Wales I
suspected we would be in for a surprise. So long as it is
clear on Mera I don't mind it's going to be bad enough climbing
without poor visibility and deep snow.
We
have only had a short walk today, definitely feeling fitter
now, what with nine hours plus sleep a night and a lot of
food. Followed William which I think is a sheep and not a
goat all the way to camp eight. Quite sad really since this
was his last walk, having been forced across a temporary bridge
constructed this morning by Mr. Walker and co. The goat had
his throat slit, the blood collected and drunk by the porters,
the head and tail awarded to the throat slitter - namely Mohem
our talented and trusted assistant, sherpa and tea maker.
The speed at which the goat or sheep became a carcass ready
for consumption was a marvel to watch. Tobes and I posed in
front of the cameras with tea and biscuits above the sheep
or goats intestines - typical English humour!
Great
camp site, still raining though, played football, shot put
and javelin in the Mera Olympics before afternoon tea. What
a life, raining again this evening, quite chilly up here at
4200m, looking forward to tomorrow - hoping the weather will
improve. Laters..."
