Diary
by Toby Wootton;
"A
late start and on the road at 9.15am. Only walked for an hour
and fifteen minutes before coming to the end of the valley.
We stopped in a very new looking tea house which actually
had Mars bars and San Miguels. We were given a cup of sweet
Tibetan tea before walking the last 20 mins to what was described
to us as the Hinku Hotel. This is a small cluster of very
new looking tea houses, I think it's officially called Pang-Nang.
They look like they've really been put up for the Mera Peak
expeditions like us only. Because of this we were all fairly
dissapointed to see such civilisation after the endurance
day through the jungles but also quite pleased to be in the
tea house rather than the mess tent in the evening, to dry
out our kit and so on.
We
spent some time fitting our crampons in the afternoon, after
lunch with William's liver as the entreé. From here
you can see the route up East, towards the glacier. Tomorrow
will be a lot harder and we are all feeling the cold here
already at 4500m. There's been a lot of snow up higher and
tomorrow will see the start of the real tough walking. Everyone
is on good form and well acclimatised, to the extent that
we talked and debated throughout the walk, breathing is becoming
much easier for everyone. Everyone is feeling very positive,
the next couple of days and the depths of snow and state of
the glacier will tell. Oh
yeah, and we almost managed to avoid the rain today although
it was absolutely still bucketing because of our walk only
being a couple of hours. That's it..."
