Tomorrow's
World: 8.12.99, 7.30pm, BBC1
From
a point on the North-Western fringes of the Mongolian
Gobi Desert, where open earthy planes meet sand dunes
and the Bogd mountains [map], LiveTX
broadcast live pictures to London in the first ever
Internet transmission of its kind, participating in
a four-and-a-half minute feature with Peter Snow in
the Tomorrow's World studio.
Ben,
James and Joe, the team of three from London (1 demonstrating
the equipment and 2 documenting the event) were joined
by their local guide in temperatures of 20 degrees below
zero, just before sunset. Freezing batteries, a couple
of laptop crashes, extreme wind and a couple of dropped
phone connections threatened to spoil the show, but
when everything mattered the equipment pulled through.
